Who is Spider-Man's sidekick anyway?
Why do authors include sidekicks for their main heroes? Sidekicks serve several purposes. First, they are a sounding board for the hero, asking the right questions and giving the reader insight into the hero's motivations and personality. Second, as a character in his own right, a sidekick can be the focus of the plot and reveal his own motivation and personality. Third, the hero and sidekick relationship can itself provide interesting insight and material for both characters. And lastly, when in a rut you can always have the sidekick kidnapped or killed. (Hey, it worked for Batman.)
